About Me

Julia Borden

I am a writer, photographer and musician from Calgary, Alberta. My parents brought me to an exhibition of wildlife photography at the National Gallery of Canada when I was nine years old and I have been going on adventures with my camera ever since. My passion for storytelling, the natural world, and anything that gets me an adrenaline fix has turned into an artistic career founded on taking photos of things that I love, in the hopes that my audience will learn to love them too.

My Work

"At the point where I'm trying to force something and it's not happening, and I'm getting frustrated with, say, writing a poem, I can go and pick up the brushes and start painting. At the point where the painting seems to not be going anywhere, I go and pick up the guitar.""

—Joni Mitchell

The World Is Beautiful.

This is the most important message that I bring to my work, whether that is photography, writing, music or anything else that I do. My work looks to find something special in everything, and capture that bit of wonder to share with others. I believe that there is no such thing as "ordinary", only under-explored. I believe that anyone could do what I do, and that is why I do it. So much wonder is waiting for us, in the 'little miracles' that make up the world, and I don't just want to capture them. I want to show them in a way that makes everyone who sees them want to go out and find more little miracles of their own in the world.

The feeling of hearing a favourite song on the radio, of seeing early spring shoots poking through the snow, of birdsong drifting through a window after a long day, is something that can't be photographed or painted or recorded. It has to be felt. Art has the power to make the world a better place, whether by calls to action and positive change or just by making the hard parts of living feel a bit less immediate. I can't bottle birdsong for you, but I can go out into the world looking for little things that give me hope, and try to capture them in a way that make you see in them the same things I do.

"Don’t adventures ever have an end? I suppose not. Someone else always has to carry on the story."

—Bilbo Baggins, The Fellowship of the Ring (J. R. R. Tolkien)

"Rhythm is as necessary in a picture as pigment; it is as much a part of painting as of music."
